AAuxiliary equipment: additional equipment to work in line with the press - stitchers, gluers, chiller, ovens and driers. BBack perforator unit: this is an addition to a folder - it is used for faster folders, such as an SSC folder, and folders that are folding down to A4 products or less, and enables the air to escape from the web so that air-gaps are not created. The unit creates tiny perforations on the web just before it is folded. If air gaps do appear in the web as it is folded, creases will form. Blanket cylinder: to press the cylinder (using a rubber blanket), which is used the plate cylinder against the web to give an impression. Basically the web runs between the blanket cylinder and the plate cylinder, the pressure between the two produces an "impression" on the web. Brush dampening system: dampening by special brush dampening units. Fust clean-up of the printing plate with less wastage. No use textile covers. (ex.: Koebau commander) CChill rolls: the paper web runs over the chill rolls to cool it before it enters the folder. CIC unit: the three color common impression cylinder. Cold-set (Coldset): a web-offset press without a dryer, typically the Goss Community, Creusot Loire Super Gazette, Rockwell Tribune, King Press. Control Panel/System: provide remote control of inking, press drive and compressor functions, circumferential and sidelay unit registers, pre-setting and imposition facilities. Commercial web-offset: same as heatset. A press used to print commercial, magazine type products that use a better quality ink and paper - a combination that requires drying before it enters the folder. (MAN OCTOMAN, MAN ROTOMAN, MAN LITHOMAN, MAN POLYMAN, MAN CARTOMAN, MAN BOOKMATIC) CUTCON: the automatic cutting register control (MAN ROTOMAN M). Cut-off: the circumference of the plate cylinder, can be single circumference (Community) or double circumference (Goss Urbanite, MAN Lithoman), which produces double the amount of pages per unit. e.g. Community - 8 tabloid pages, Urbanite - 16 tabloid pages. Sizes can vary depending on the required product size. Different countries or continents have a preferred size, generally the USA use 578 mm, Europe 630 mm and Asia 546 mm, but of course there are cross-overs. DDampening System: special system in offset press for plate dampening. Can be continuous-feed as on GOSS Community. Provision can connect to a dampening solution circulation system. Motor drive dampening fountain roller possible to pre-damp the plate at the press start-up for faster clean-up of the plate (also see brush dampening). Dryer: dries the ink on commercial product web before it enter the folder. FFolder: can be jaw or rotary to fold paper broadsheet, tabloid, double parallel and quoter. SSC folder usually associated with GOSS Community. SSC folder is capable of folding quicker than an SC folder. Folders have top speeds, some only capable of around 16,000 cph (copies per hour), whereas some modern folders can fold at up to 70,000 cph. The folder folds the web into the desired size of product, before it enters the stacker, slitter etc. HH-frame: a type of unit frame which is roughly in an H shape - usually a satellite unit with 8 or 9 cylinders for producing 4 colours on one side of the web. H-type satellite (H-sattelite): sattelite based on H-frame. Heatset: see commercial. Most heatset presses are commercial. (ex.: MAN Octoman, Polyman, Rotoman). Horizontal web travel: when the web runs in a horizontal manner as opposed to vertical. An example is this: A typical commercial press, with 4-units will have a horizontal web travel, whereas a coldset 4-hi tower will have vertical web travel, where the web enters the bottom unit, and travels up to the top unit - vertically. IInfeed (in-feed): the unit that prepares the web from the splicer to the first unit. The in-feed literally 'feeds' the web into the first unit. Ink fountain: special fountain for ink, can be high-capacity less frequent refilling required. Inking system (continious): special press system to provide ink running to plate. Can be equipped with film inking units. The ink flow is continious via large-diameter inking rollers (COEBAU COMMANDER). Spiral ink feed roller for uniform inking at all speeds. IR dryer: infra red drier to dry web at commercial printing. NNewspaper web-offset: coldset, for newspaper products that do not print commercial quality product. PPlate cylinder: the cylinder that the impression plate is mounted on. Works in relation with the blanket cylinder. RReel splicer: equipment used to splice two reels (webs) together. Reel-stand (rellstand): the web (reel) is placed on the reel-stand to feed the units with paper. SSatellite unit: a unit, often in an H shape, which allows the web to go all around it rather than straight through it. Satellite units, whether 3-color or 4-color, only print color on one side of the web, and so it is often backed up (in order to get color on the other side of the web) with a mono unit or a half-deck (1/0). SSC folder: heavy GOSS jaw folder to fold production at speeds up to 30,000 cph. Stacker: the device to stack printing productions. TTower (4-hi tower): 4 units stacked in order to print 4 color on both sides of the web. UUnder web-lead system: used if the units have the web entering from underneath (i.e. vertical web-travel units). VVertical web-travel: see horizontal web-travel. WWeb brake detector: in case of a web break, the press automatically stops to avoid damage to the printing units. web-edge control: used to control the lateral movement of the web (i.e. if the web moves sideways in between the units). Web-offset press: used a continuous web rather than sheets of paper. Prints from roll to fold, capable of a variety of products. Web-lead: guides the web. YY-type unit: usually prints 2 over 1 colour. Y-type satellite: will print 3 over 0 colour. |
